Artist's Statement
"I grew up with an artist mother. At home, I learned to make things: pictures, carvings, macramé, jewelry, pottery, photographs. I learned what the world was made of, and how things fit together. At school I learned to grade things, including myself, on a scale of 'good' to 'bad.' I learned to divide people according to categories. I was lucky, got good grades, went to good schools, and was given good prospects. After about ten years of trying to make things fit into their inflexible, categorical boxes, I went back to art, where I could work with people and materials according to how they really behaved and what they really wanted to do. After another ten years or so of making things out of the earth beneath my feet, I re-discovered what a few people have reminded us over the years: 'art' means, simply, to fit together (the Indo-European root 'ar' is common to such words as arm, harmony, order, ordain, reason, ratio, arithmetic, rational, read, ritual, articulate, hatred, and kindred). Art relates all of us, fundamentally, to life. Some of us work in stone, paint, clay, or paper. Others work in words, movement, ideas, and relationships. It's all art.
