Artist's Statement, 'Portals,' Winter Show & Silent Auction, 2011:
Brandon Conn’s current work can simply be described as an exploration of form. He uses the self-imposed limitation of a monochromatic color scheme to allow for more focus on the nature of the forms themselves without “overcomplicating” them. As such, the result is a type of “Design Art” in which an overall minimalist aesthetic of restricted expression is maintained.
"For the theme of PORTALS, I liked the suggestions about exploring transformation and transfiguration, so I decided to go with it. It immediately made me think of a popular sci-fi situation where an object or person goes through some time-worp portal, wormhole or different dimension and is somehow transformed or changed by the shift. Or vice-versa, when a type of transformation occurs, it could be said that it marks the beginning of entering into a new dimension or phase and the dying of an old one.
I decided to go with this idea but wanted to show a progressive change in 3 parts. The first two parts are both on a flat surface (canvas). It's shows a shift or change from simple, elliptical forms to an illusion of a multi-dimensional organic outgrowth. The third part shifts materials and dimension, from flat canvas to wood emerging 3-dimensionally, but the original elliptical shapes are still evident and intact (mostly). It's a simple abstract form that hints at a type of evolutionary metamorphosis."
