Artist's Statement, 'In This Moment,' 'Portals,' Winter Show & Silent Auction, 2011:
Portals got me looking at doors and gates for inspiration. The Chinese Moon Gate is about framing a moment in time, being present in that moment. I wanted to bring that spirit to something small and easy to take into everyday life. This piece will hopefully serve as a reminder to appreciate the moment and be present with it.
Biography:
From the complexity of a nautilus shell to the grace of the heron, it is not possible to improve on the beauty of nature. So I work to capture some essence of what touches me and hope that others will find a connection there.
My childhood growing up by the sea shores of east and west and a lifelong interest in the creative arts of all kinds provide the inspiration. While studying graphic design and art history here in Oregon I got a chance to work with local clay artists in the area. Discovering the wonderful way that clay is able to record textures and the fluid quality of glaze has kept me creating in clay for years. The textures and images I use are intended to work with the glaze to complete the piece. The possibilities are endless. I am enchanted with the surprises in the process.
In recent years my forest scientist husband has inspired me to incorporate native plant textures into my work to help create an appreciation for NW native plants. Hiking around in NW forests for the past 35 years has helped me appreciate these special plants. I hope that their textures captured in clay will inspire others to value and protect them as well.
My work are all one of a kind, hand formed pieces high fired in my gas kiln on our property here in the country outside of Lebanon, OR.
