Artist's Statement, ‘Specimen #379’ - 'Portals,' Winter Show & Silent Auction, 2011:

Medium: Mixed Media (paper, wire, thread, wood, LED lights)

Specimen #379, organ tissue sample, species unknown
The Norwood Collection
During 1971, scientific oddity collectors Del & Hazel Norwood traveled to Europe in search of new works. While in Albania they discovered a small shop off the beaten path filled with taxidermy and pickled animal parts. Hazel noted that she first spotted Specimen #379 due to its unusual appearance. The shop proprietors records mentioned the piece originated from a somewhere in the United States Southwest region, but no further information was provided. The Norwoods purchased and sent it home to Minnesota. DNA testing has recently been performed but no known species was matched. The couple showed it proudly amongst their other works. When asked why she purchased the work she replied “It was like looking at a portal to an unknown world. How could I pass it up?”
Mr. Norwood died in 1989. Mrs. Norwood had always wanted to pass the collection on to her children but they declined. She managed the collection until her death in 2009.  Currently, the collection is slowly being sold off to interested parties.

Gale Everett currently holds several works from the Norwood collection. When she isn't attempting to solve the mysteries surrounding the works, she spends her days creating art. She is becoming known for her mixed media lighted sculptures incorporating wire and paper. Gale is also working on a series of small dog block prints. You can find images of her work in progress at http://sticksstonesnpaperstew.com.
