Artist's Statement, 'Who's Your Goddess Now Baby?':
"Barbie" represents a cultural statement to which I have never been able to relate. I have had an aversion to her because, with her bizarre body and unreal ideal of a 'pretty woman', she has become an icon, a figure to be emulated and revered by young girls.
My re-constructed Barbies, transformed into three more realistic forms-- a middle aged, an old, and a crone-like Goddess body-- have been a transforming experience for me, as well as for her. It brings her into a reality to which I can finally relate.
Transformation is a path we all walk until we die. Willing, conscious, or not!
Trusting the innate knowledge that resides inside of me is both a challenge and a joy.
My creative work often expresses drama and can portray a direct message to the viewer, and to me. I often awaken to something new in myself as I create. I see my work as having both order and randomness. This allowed me to feel comfortable exploring the several media and techniques required in my Portal piece.
