Artist's Statement

"As a science teacher and biologist I am often in touch with the many shapes and colors of nature. Plants, animals, and their habitats inspire my work. Aspects of Asian art, from the simplicity of bamboo stems and leaves to architectural features of lanterns and pagodas, can also be found in my ceramic pieces."

"I use a potter’s wheel to shape my work and then add surface designs such as brushwork and texture. Most of my ceramic pieces are lidded vessels, but I also enjoy throwing other functional work and creating nature related sculptures."

"Most suitable for my work are transparent glazes, such as celadons and shinos. Many pieces have been fired with the addition of salt or soda adding additional elements of surprise and beauty to surfaces. My desire is to continue to explore the many aspects and variables of clay and glazes and embrace the discoveries to enhance my work."
