Jack Larson — photography

Artist Statement:

My journey in photography began in High School in 1950. A tiny closet housed my first darkroom. However, it was the incredible beauty that I saw while backpacking in the High Sierra that provided the impetus for taking photography seriously. Living in the Bay Area of California, I was strongly influenced, first, by the work of Ansel Adams, and later, by the work of Galen Rowell.

From the mid-80's until 2005, I had a hiatus from photography. It was the delicate loveliness of the flowers and the spectacular sunrises and sunsets of Kauai that provided the impetus for my first digital camera, an Olympus point and shoot. Once again, I was hooked. This time, I was obsessed. The combination of instant feedback and the digital darkroom opened new worlds. Photoshop and Lightroom and a wide variety of other complicated and sophisticated software had a steep learning curve that tested my commitment as well as my sanity. Despite being in its infant stage, digital photography has proven its artistic potential far beyond my wildest dreams. And because creativity is at the heart of my photographic journey, a constant task is to make certain that the technology is always the servant of my vision.

In addition to belonging to the Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild and the area Digital Group, I participate daily in an international photo blog, Aminus 3.
